Another interesting utility. G-Mailto will give you mailto: links connected to your Gmail account.

1 TB Gmail

Due to system glitch some users received 1 TB storage space. Unfortunately for them this error was fixed pretty fast. BTW: Google employees do have such big email accounts.

Problems with attachments

To test Gmail I have sent to myself an email with few MB attachment. Unfortunately I can download just 1 MB! OK, calm down. We can fix it by using ssl connection https://gmail.google.com. The problem is gone.

Gmail? What is it?

Gmail is a free email service from Google. Main features are:
  • incredible storage capacity - 1000 MB (to keep it simple Google says that's 1 GB)
  • username up to 30 characters (minimum 6)
  • labels - virtual folders to sort your mails
  • conversations - all sent and received messages with the same subject are merged into threads
  • spam filter
  • search your mails with Google technology
  • antivirus measures (Gmail doesn't accept any executable files, even in archives like zip)
  • no commercial messages, instead text ads might be displayed on the right side of the screen
  • 20 filters to manage your messages (by subject, sender, etc.)
  • simple address book (new addresses are added automatically)
Do not forget that Gmail is in beta phase. You can't create an account without an invitation send to you by other Gmail user. Google gives invites to Gmail users randomly. You have to be patient. If you are desperated enough you can buy an invite on Ebay. But why should you pay for a free service? Better ask for one here or here.

It has begun

After few days of waiting I received invitation needed to open Gmail email account. Big thanks to Gmail-it-forward forum. I registered myself and I must say that I like this service. Nice, cosy, not cluttered interface. The best part is of course its capacity - 1 GB of storage. I will not fill it till the rest of my life. Now I just need to change my aliases to forward my mails to Gmail. Well, as Gmail is in beta stage and it is webmail only it won't be my main email account for a while. I will test it using it just for newsletters and messages from mailinglists.
